East St. Louis' Voice On Mental Illness


NAMI East St. Louis - Is a group of family and friends who have felt the pain of Mental Illness.  Our members are parents and relatives, patients and ex-patients, friends, and professionals.

About Us

NAMI East St. Louis is a not-for-profit self-help organization whose goal is to improve the quality of life for persons with mental illness and their families.   Our groups are free and open to all.  

We provide information on:

  • mental illness

  • understanding mental illness mental illness in the family

  • anxiety

  • depression

  • behavior problems

  • Alzheimer's

  • stress

  • children (depression and stress)

  • emotional abuse/neglect of children

  • our children's self esteem

Our Mission  

  • is to educate

  • to strengthen

  • to give hope

  • to dispel myths on mental illness

  • to give families, friends, care givers and the community a source as to where to receive help

  • to help people overcome loneliness and isolation

  • to participate in social activities

What We Do

  • ADVOCATES - for programs and legislation that will provide innovative and meaningful assistance to persons with mental illness.

  • ASSISTS - in formation of family self-help and advocacy groups in local communities.

  • EDUCATES - family members and friends through regional workshops and informed speakers from mental health organizations and government agencies.

  • ENCOURAGES - more research into causes and effective treatment for emotional illnesses.

  • EXPRESSES - the needs and recommendations of consumers and families to the mental health system.

  • INFLUENCES - public policy by providing consumer representation on boards and organizations in the area of chronic mental illness.

  • INFORMS - members and other concerned citizens about NAMI activities through a regular newsletter.

  • PROMOTES - community awareness and the removal of stigma attached to mental illness by sharing experience and knowledge.

  • SERVES - as a clearing house and resource center for information about chronic mental illness.

  • SUPPORTS - development of comprehensive services for mental health consumers and their families and monitors existing services.

NAMI East St. Louis also provides useful resources and referral to families, friends, care givers and the community.  We provide opportunities for advocacy on behalf of those facing the challenge of mental illness.
